Susanna Berlich

Susanna (Berlich) Struve

Susanna was born in 1647 at Jenna, the daughter of Burchard and Barbara (Hilliger) Berlich. She married Georg Adam Struve on 30th August 1663 at Dresden. They had a number of children of whom the following we have some biographical details:

Susanna died on 22nd January 1699 (she survived Georg Adam by six years). On the death of Susanna, a number of funeral sermons were published and some these are shown below.

One of her sons, Burkhard Gotthelf Struve, published in 1699 a book in her memory with the title: Pia Mortis Desideria Atque Praesagia In Memoriam Beatissimi Obitus Pientissimae Matris Susannae Struviae natae Berlichiae …. Etc….

Unusual for a woman at that time, Susanna published a number of books on religious themes. One, published in 1671, was titled: Christliche Fest- und Sontags-Gedanken oder Geistliche Andachts-Perl Womit eine …. It was heavily illustrated of which some are reproduced below.

Among the illustrations are a marriage ceremony (left) and a lady kneeling in prayer.

And a young woman receiving the blessing of the local Lutheran preacher.
